Yerba Mate? Is That Aussie Slang?
November 13th, 2009
The first time I heard of Yerba Mate, I said it wrong myself. Yerba will sound like it looks, but mate pronounced "ma-tay". It has more to get used to the name, as it does not addicted to drink! Where does the name? Yerba is for herbs Spanish. Mate refers to the gourd cup used for drinking. In other words, yerba mate is literally a "cup herb".
Mate has nothing to do with Australia other than the fact that it comes from the South Hemisphere! They really thrive in South America, where it is comparable with the love for coffee and Europe, North America's love for tea. Yerba mate has been for centuries and throughout Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil are seen. It is so popular that you can regularly see people in the streets with the mate in his hand. No, I've never been there to see it firsthand, but it turns out, my brother had to drink when he spent 3 months in Guyana.
The> Tea is made from the leaves of the yerba mate tree brewed – a kind of holly that can grow up to 45 meters (15 meters). The leaf is packed in a hollowed-out pumpkin filled with boiling water. A sort of straw as a bombilla sat sipping in the pumpkin for the brew. Some cultures regarded the drinking of maté a ritual. The gourd is passed around between friends and is constantly being replenished, until the taste is gone. This does not mean, one can not brew (in a coffee maker like me) do not normally but it is the traditional method for drinking mate.
Almost unknown ten years ago was yerba mate in North America, but times are changing. The health benefits of drinking yerba mate are far greater than that of green tea, and started as a result, more health-conscious people, mate picking up on the concept of drinking. Sales are now 20 times what they were in 1995, and this number will keep growing as more people learn about it. Celebrities are also now boastdrinking on their newly found.
Since switching to mate a few years ago I found myself full of energy and no longer need as much sleep. I've rarely sick and feel healthier overall than I've felt in years. Drinking mate is also a strange humming like a lot of coffee drinking, but without the shock. I drink one cup in the morning and find myself awake, focused and totally refreshed. I am ready to start the day, and I often drink a cup or three, as the day goes by.
You canBuy yerba mate online, but it's usually at your next health food store. Some people are initially put off by the funny like appearance and taste. I agree plain yerba mate tea tastes a bit like hay, but I do not drink my green tea or black coffee. A little sugar and milk taste great. If you want, try to drink it, I have a growing list of recipes on my site. You can find something you like better and you could someday be able to send in anew recipe!
I recommend trying yerba mate tea from themselves – especially if you're a coffee drinker. There are no side effects and health benefits are great. The experts say that a glass of wine before bed do not go out every night for a healthier body and a longer life, but why is that? I say a cup of Yerba Mate every morning. You may end up loving it as much as I want!
